Navigating the Fad Diet Minefield

Posted on 14th February, 2015 | Comments Off on Navigating the Fad Diet Minefield

This month I attended the Pete Evans Paleo Diet presentation, and watched (with another 299 people) as he cooked his famous cauliflower fried rice. I’m not keen on fad diets, nor am I 100% convinced that this is strictly a Paleo Diet, given the obvious fact that Pete is cooking with species of animals and plants that simply would not have been available to Palaeolithic man. This got me thinking about Fad Diets… there are plenty of them – Atkins, Body Trim, Liver Cleansing, Blood Type. They all have a place and those that work aim to reinforce healthy habits over a longer...

Unfortunately we live in a toxic...

Fat Loss not Weight Loss

Fat Loss not Weight Loss

As a qualified Naturopath and Nutritionist I feel concerned when I see advertisements for ‘Weight Loss’, because while we know our nation is getting fatter as a whole – and we need to collectively lose some weight, I worry that people are getting a raw deal on their weight loss programs. Low fat, low calorie diets are still advised – and I was guilty of this approach too. But with a new look at the studies I’m changing my approach. Rather than be thinking about ‘Weight Loss’, we should be talking about ‘Fat Loss’. Now you might think I’m being smart but there is a...

In 2007, around 25% of children aged 2–16 were overweight or obese, with 6% classified as obese. Data from the Australian Diabetes,...

Yep it’s true! Getting kids to eat vegetables often involves a range of strategies including secrecy, punishment or a combination of both.
